V MAGAZINE: ARE YOU BEING SERVED?

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

V
Magazine is mixing high-end tableware with low-grade snack cakes in this fabulous spread they just released, shot by photographer Plamen Petkov and styled by Victoria Granof. Titled Are You Being Served?, the gorgeous array of twelve different images is a visual junk-food feast, featuring deli favorites like Hostess cupcakes and Ho-Ho's, all delicately arranged on floral plates by Hermes and Versace. Have you ever seen a glazed Honey Bun look so refined in your life?! Man, I need to step my dish game up...

S MODA - IN THICKNESS & HEALTH

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

As a slightly thicker young woman myself, I'm always beyond-happy when a 'plus size' editorial comes out that's actually current and sexy. When it comes to high fashion, bigger girls are usually shunned and turned away to do more boring catalog-style work, but these days I'm thankfully seeing a lot more voluptuous girls in haute spreads. In this months issue of S Moda, American model Candice Huffine smolders throughout a six-page cover spread, a sultry-yet-healthy smile fixed on her face. If only more real women could step out of the house with such fierceness and confidence! It's time to embrace those killer curves...

ELVIS DI FAZIO PHOTOGRAPHY, A POP OF PORNO

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

If you find yourself drawn to the super raw, porno-esque photography style of Terry Richardson, then you're sure to also enjoy Elvis Di Fazio, a Sydney-based photog featuring similarly contrasting vibrance and fun-filled vulgarity in his shots. Often working with big names like Adidas and Chanel, his style always offers up bright color and lusty youth, providing just the right amount of provocation needed to make things interesting. I'm sharing a few PG-13 ones with you here, but to check out the real good stuff, click here...

FOR THOU FORSAKETH ME - SUNDAY SCHOOL WITH A TWIST

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

As a kid, I remember being forced into attending Wednesday and Sunday schools until I made my communion, and I absolutely hated it. No offense to the institution or anything - it was just such a stale environment, reading old books and memorizing lengthy songs and prayers. Eh, just not my thing. But perhaps had Stephanie Cam been there to recreate the same blasphemously exhilirating photos seen is the following spread, I might have paid attention a little better. Shot by photographer Nican J. Robinson, the blurred, darkly-lit images are set within the grounds of an old church - creepy basement not excluded. Here Cam seems to be fighting an inner battle with God and herself, raging through the halls with cigarette smoke trailing her every move. Looks like someone's due for confession...

MARC JACOBS TAKES VANDALISM AGAINST HIS STORE & TURNS IT INTO A SHIRT

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Marc Jacobs
has always been one of those super hip, avant-garde designers that can just take the most boring or ridiculous thing and turn it into a brilliant trend within moments - he's like an Ambassador for youthful style. Let's see...he's besties with Lil' Kim, released his own MJ condoms, has a SpongeBob Squarepants tattoo, dons lace dresses to the MET, and now he's proving his coolness yet again, releasing a t-shirt featuring the very artwork that vandalized his Soho store last week. After French graffiti writer Kidult took to the storefront with a paint-loaded fire extinguisher, spraying ART in huge letters across the entire facade, Marc decided to retaliate by photographing the tag, then printing it on a limited series of $689 t-shirts. Marc even went on to tweet: “Available now for $689. Signed by the artist, $680″. Apparently Kidult isn't happy about this one bit, especially since he won't be seeing a dime out of those tees, but he should just appreciate the free publicity. Either way, I'm pretty interested to see what he'll do next...

CONTRIBUTING EDITOR PRESENTS: UP ALL NIGHT

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Photographer Bijoux Altamirano is bringing the 90s back in this super-colorful spread for online magazine Contributing Editor, where lovely model Irene Kim gives us her best in rave girl chic. Upon first glance it reminded me of DIMEPIECE's last collection which we featured on Metropark about a month ago, combining funky grunge graphics and that psychedelic vibe so reminiscent of the 90s era. Cast against a vibrant backsplash of graffiti, Irene hangs tough in fringed Moschino leather and leopard-printed Vision Streetwear swim trunks - all that's missing is a pacifier and some body glitter.

"SHE'S SO NERVOUS" - PILLS & PRADA

Monday, May 14, 2012

Valley of the Dolls
got quite the modern makeover in Interview Russia's April issue, where models Alana Zimmer and Hanne Gaby Odiele rock sharp bobs while popping an assortment brightly-colored pills. Aptly titled She's So Nervous, the two beauties seem trapped in their luxe glass house, feeding eachother bottle after bottle of uppers & downers chased with booze and smokes. Lensed by Steven Pan with Karen Kaiser as stylist, they managed to evoke that retro 60s vibe while still staying on point with current trends. That is this seasons Prada, afterall...

THE METROCARD PROJECT

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

As a New Yorker, I couldn't help but fall in love with this awesome project by SVA student Melanie Chernock, which aims to give the iconic NY MetroCard a much needed makeover. The series is ongoing, with new designs being added to her repertoire on the regular. Each card has some kind of NY flare - like Broadway lights and ketchup squirts - and some are created for specific neighborhoods entirely. Little Italy's is spelled out in spaghetti, and Chelsea? Glitter, naturally. Oh, how I wish they were real!

THE GIFT

Monday, May 07, 2012

The Gift
- directed by Carl E. Rinsch - is a Sci-Fi short set in a futuristic and dismal Russia, where robotic dogs walk the streets and city access is granted only upon militant testing of ones tongue. From the beginning of the film, we follow a sad-looking gentleman on a mission to deliver a gift, a red, gold-ribbon-sealed box which he carries with him through the barren metropolis. But the present isn't what it seems, and upon arrival at the desired destination, his plans go a little awry. What follows is a high-speed police/robot chase through town, and it's so compelling that you kind of wish it was a full-length feature by the end. Peep for yourself...

TOUGH GALS & TATTOOS FOR W KOREA'S MAY ISSUE

Friday, May 04, 2012

Ever since the worlds introduction to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo heroine Lisbeth Salander, just about every fashion publication out is releasing editorials influenced by that tattooed, tough-gal look, and W Korea is no different. Starring Dutch model Milou van Groesen with a stern, slicked-back due, the shots are set in a classic tattoo parlor, hazy lights and flash sheets galore. Unlike Lisbeth though, our little Milou is still rocking the latest in D&G corsetry...
