SPORTY SOPHISTICATION BY HARPER'S BAZAAR KOREA

Friday, March 30, 2012

Keeping with the current trend of athelticism in high-fashion, Harper's Bazaar Korea merged gorgeous model Candice Swanepoel with the infamous Terry Richardson to create a super-sleek, sport-inspired spread. Aptly titled Game On, the editorial features Candice in all sorts of athletic-wear - from Versace-clad tennis to fencing in Hermés - with classic sports brands like Nike and Wilson thrown in for good measure. Quite a workout...

MIIKE SNOW - THE WAVE

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Swedish indie pop band Miike Snow just released the official video for their latest single, The Wave, and it's defininitely interesting to say the least. Imagine a strange world in which a small desert community gets blasted with an atomic bomb, killing all the children at the local playground, only to be met by a patrol of dazed, doughnut & coffee wielding policemen. Then as if things couldn't get any weirder, a swarm of shirtless, latex-clad creatures rush the scene as well, facing off against the cops in a song & dance battle. Check it out for yourself...

SHARON STONE'S DOG DAY AFTERNOON

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Sharon Stone
has always been known for playing the part of a bad girl - and playing it well - from her hustling hooker role in Casino to the infamous leg-uncrossing femme fatale she evoked in Basic Instinct. And all these years later the gal's still got it, starring alongside actor Anton Rivas in this Dog Day Afternoon inspired spread for the French Revue de Modes. Lensed by photographer Thierry Le Gouès, the two stars play socipathic lovers gone on a gun-fueled rampage against the cops. Kinda like Bonnie & Clyde meets Mickey & Mallory...

THE PANIC ROOM BY TILT

Friday, March 23, 2012

Hotel Au Vieux Panier
in Marseilles, France isn't your average bed & breakfast or boutique establishment. Rather than endless corridors and dozens of luxury rooms all designed with the same chic specifications, this renovated épicerie is composed of only six bedrooms in total, each uniquely designed by a different artist. The rooms range from a small single (90€) to an extra large suite (190€) but my easy favorite is without a doubt Tilt's, a French graff writer hailing from Toulouse. Along with his friends Tober and Grizz, the trio completely sealed up one half of the room, then proceeded to 'destroy' the other half with layer upon layer of colorful throwups and tags. The final result is pretty spectacular, check it out for yourself...

MARRIED TO THE MOB SPRING COLLECTION AVAILABLE NOW!

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

For their 2012 Spring collection, female streetwear brand Married to the Mob is mixing the romantic with the risqué to create a line perfect for the seductive season ahead. Their classic array of graphic tees feature an abundance of fiery motifs like hearts & roses, offered up in various warm hues to play up the collections lusty, springtime inspiration. Along with a re-released version of the infamous Supreme Bitch tee, you can also expect snake-print stamp logos, v-necks, and a sweet selection of tanks. Don't forget to check their new mens pieces as well, each available in two color ways with red, black, and white as the dominant shades.

As for their gorgeous lookbook model, 21-year-old Gita is an Oakland-bred FemmeC whose style reminds me of a cross between Aaliyah and Baby Spice - definitely can't go wrong there. Her most popular tracks at the moment are Lights Out and Hood Rich, mixing original sound and steez with that classic Cali grittiness that you just wanna bop to. A most official bitch for sure! Keep an eye out for this one, she's bout to blow up. Now onto the Lookbook shot by Ysa Perez...

"YOUR SCENE SUCKS", POKING FUN AT SOCIAL STEREOTYPES

Friday, March 16, 2012

Growing up in a city like New York, pretty much everybody falls into some sort of "scene" or social group, whether they even mean to or not. We're probably best know for our hip-hop movement and influx of imported hipsters, but there are so many more different groups among us that don't get nearly as much recognition - Juggalos and emo chicks, I'm talking about you. However, thanks to the folks at Your Scene Sucks, now everbody from 'myspace whores' to cyber goths can find themselves amongst the ranks of other scenesters too. What, no Facebook skanks or Twitter floozies? Click (here) to see the full lineup!

CRYSTAL RENN, THE MENTAL PATIENT

Thursday, March 15, 2012

I've always had a great deal of respect for model Crystal Renn - not only has she overcome major personal hurdles with anorexia and written a book about it, but she's also got a real knack for performing in front of the camera, regardless of where her size/weight are at. Plus the girl is drop dead gorgeous, though sometimes truly talented models need to know when to look frightening too, which Renn proves possible in this eerie editorial for Interview's March issue. Starring as a deranged mental patient alongside her creepy warden in white, Karolina Kurkova, the two interact within a decrepit psychiatric ward, partaking in all sorts of bondage and disciplinary freakiness. Hey, at least she's wearing Hermés...

ANASTASIJA KONDRATJEVA, ALTERED SPECIES

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Models these days - as beautiful as they all are - certainly don't have that same pizazz that the 90's girls did. Kate, Naomi, Cindy, Linda, those were pure icons, the type of women that could inspire an entire generation. And while there are certainly supermodels these days too, the majority of high-end favorites tend to look more alien-esque than classically 'sexy' or cookie-cutter beautiful. Perhaps that's what inspired this latest Interview magazine editorial dubbed Alternate Species and starring icy-faced Latvian model Anastasija Kondratjeva, who poses in an assortment of elegant outfits and reptilian facial prosthetics. Definitely an odd juxtaposition, but the rainbow-hued scales do look quite nice against her expensive garments...

JAKE GYLLENHAAL CHANNELS AMERICAN PSYCHO IN 'THE SHOES' NEW VIDEO

Monday, March 12, 2012

Actor/heart-throb Jake Gyllenhaal is taking a short break from his usual roles starring as sexually confused cowboys and Persian princes, this time starring in a strange and super-violent music video from French group The Shoe's latest single, Time to Dance. Directed by Daniel Wolfe, the 8 1/2 minute clip follows a demented Jake around on his day to day - working out, having a steam, and viciously murdering any dancing stranger that strikes his fancy. I find the whole thing slightly reminiscent of American Pyscho, but instead of slaughtering hookers a-la Patrick Bateman, Gyllenhaal keeps his focus on dancers instead. Partying hipsters, beware...

IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, NO...IT'S SUPERMAN IN D&G!

Monday, March 12, 2012

Some of Americas most iconic superheroes and comic book characters have gotten quite the makeover recently, trading in their usual uniform of capes and tights for some slightly more designer attire. Dreamt up by Hong Kong based artist John Woo back in 2010, the illustrator strips icons like Edward Scissorhands and Superman from their norm of leather & spandex, only to be replaced by Band of Outsider suits and D&G shearling jackets. Not too shabby, Clark Kent. However if you're more of a Cat Woman or Star Wars type of person instead, there's plenty more creations to choose from through his online shop (here)...

KILLER IN MCQUEEN

Saturday, March 10, 2012

After the tragic and unexpected passing of genius Lee Alexander McQueen back in February 2010, devastated family, friends, and fans were all left wondering what would become of his creative legacy, which was still only in it's growing phases. But Sarah Burton (who was mentored by Lee and completed his half-finished Fall 2010 collection after he died) refused to let his incredible body of work pass along with him, hence taking over the brand as creative director in May of 2010. Ever since, critics and McQueen admirers have raved about Sarah's collections, which do total justice to the darkly whimsical vision that Alexander evoked. With her latest Spring 2012 show deemed a complete success, Interview Magazine decided to honor Burton with a series of fantastic photos by Fabien Baron, where she dons her latest in ruffled masterpieces, lace masks, and handgun for good measure. McQueen would be proud...

ALEXANDER WANG SUED FOR ALLEGED CHINATOWN SWEATSHOP

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

Mega-popular Downtown designer Alexander Wang and his brother/business partner just got hit with a $50 million dollar lawsuit yesterday, filed by thirty of their employees who claimed to be working under 'sweatshop conditions' at Wang's Chinatown production location. Allegations go on to state that the staff were forced to work sixteen or more hours in a windowless room without overtime pay and threats of termination if they tried taking breaks. One 56-year old employee of 3 years, Wenyu Lu, even had to be hospitalized after passing out at his work station, where he worked a supposed 25 hours straight to perfect leather trousers. It seems that the lawsuit has yet to be served, but the designers camp adamantly denies all claims anyway. According to the plaintiffs lawyer however, a majority of apparel brands settle out of court in these cases to avoid bad publicity - which is exactly what many are already predicting is gonna happen with this one.

DARCEL'S 150/15 EXHIBITION DOESN'T DISAPPOINT

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

I've been obsessed with Darcel Disappoints ever since I first came across his character and blog a few years back, created as a cartoon alter ego for designer Craig Redman. And I mean, what's not to love about an earnestly neurotic one-eyed creature going through the motions of modern life? Famed French boutique Colette seems to love him too, which is exactly why they used the excuse of a 15th store anniversary to launch Darcel's 150/15 exhibition, composed of 150 caricatured portraits of the shops many famous friends, from Lady Gaga to Karl Lagerfeld. The show is only running until March 31st, so be sure to pop you're head in if you find yourself in Paris sometimes soon. Check out more flicks from the exhibition here...

FINISHING SCHOOL, MARIE CLAIRE STYLE

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

For their current March issue, the creative team over at Marie Claire Australia are getting prim & proper with this super fun finishing-school-inspired editorial, where dictations and dance lessons are taught in nothing but designer. Lensed by Corrie Bond, the story follows a glamorously big-haired teacher and her band of pig-tailed students as they sip tea, trim roses, and balance books on their head. With her lace Prada skirts and dazzling YSL shoes, she seems like quite the role-model for any impressionable young bunch...

SWEET DREAMS WITH FRIDA GUSTAVSSON

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Taking a cue from the seasons prominent pastel trends, POP Magazine paired up with photographer Daniel Sannwald and Swedish model Frida Gustavsson to create this super-sweet dreamlike spread, chock full of cake towers and icing backdrops. Cast in an assortment of hazy, sprintime hues, Gustavsson poses about the fantasy candyland in youthful combinations of Nike sneakers, Pucci dresses, and Chanel sweaters, all styled by the magazine's fashion editor, Tamara Rothstein. But if you ask me, above even the fresh-faced Frida and funky clothing options, it's all about the incredible-yet-unedible set design by Gary Card. It's so refreshing to see a model around a bunch of icecream and pastry for once! Let em' eat cake...

COUTURE CAST-AWAYS

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

In the real world, cast-aways and people lost at sea generally resemble someone reminiscent of Tom Hanks circa 2000, but that's not how they play things in the Vogue Nippon world. Instead, model duo Jourdan Dunn & Daria Strokous don their finest assortment of designer threads, roaming a deserted beach in the likes of Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. Photographed by Josh Olins with incredible styling by Giovanna Battaglia, the girls don't seem very bothered by their situation at all, but rather pleasantly bored, lounging on nearby palm trees and the beaches white sand. Then again, I wouldn't be mad if I was wearing the latest resort Versace either...
